Watch out for rogue traders

It can be difficult to tell a rogue trader or distraction burglar from a genuine trader.

So it’s worth taking extra time to check that they are who they say they are.

Most organisations will write to you first to arrange an appointment and their representatives will carry identification. Feel free to phone the company to double check the identity of the person at your door.

If they are legitimate they won’t mind waiting.

During the summer months there is often a rise in reported doorstep crime so be wary of people going door to door offering to carry out gardening or tree felling, gutter clearance or drain inspections.

There is no obligation for you to allow anyone into your home and you are within your rights to refuse access.

If you're concerned about rogue traders contact your local neighbourhood officer or trading standards.
