RTS Meter switch-off delayed

The government has confirmed that the planned switch-off of RTS meters at the end of June 2025 has been delayed. This decision comes after concerns that many homes - around 314,000 of them - might have been left without hot water or heating if the deadline went ahead as planned.

Instead of a sudden shut-off, there will now be a gradual and targeted phase-out. This means affected customers will be contacted by their energy suppliers well in advance and supported through the transition.

What is an RTS Meter?

RTS meters have been around since the 1980s. They use a longwave radio signal to switch between peak and off-peak energy tariffs - and in many cases, they control heating and hot water systems. While effective in their time, they are now becoming outdated.

What’s changing?

  • The original 30 June 2025 deadline has been scrapped due to the risk of widespread disruption.
  • The switch-off will happen region by region, with careful coordination.
  • Smart meters will replace most RTS meters, offering better control and real-time energy monitoring.

What should you do?

  1. Wait to be contacted – Your energy supplier will let you know when your meter is due for replacement.
  2. Engage with appointments – If you're offered a smart meter installation, book it promptly to avoid last-minute issues.
  3. Don’t worry – The aim is to make this switch as smooth and disruption-free as possible.
