Protecting the things that make your house a home

We hope you’ll never experience a fire, theft or break in at home, but unfortunately these things can happen.

Please remember that you are responsible for replacing your home contents and belongings. Contents insurance is designed to help protect your possessions and personal belongings, so it’s worth considering what a policy would cover to help you make an informed decision about whether you need one.

Help protect your home from fire

There are some simple steps you can take to help reduce the risk of fire:

• Make sure you have working smoke alarms and regularly test them
• Keep cooking surfaces and appliances clean, as leftover food and grease can become an ignition source
• Don’t overload electrical adaptors, particularly with appliances such as kettles, irons and heaters
• Switch off and unplug hair dryers, straighteners and similar appliances after use
• Never leave candles burning unattended.

Keep your home secure

You can also take simple precautions to reduce the risk of a break-in. Lock all windows and doors whenever you leave home, avoid leaving valuables on show and, if you’re going away, consider asking someone you trust to check on your property.

Never let someone you don’t know into your home if you weren’t expecting them and always ask for identification.

Consider protecting your belongings

If your belongings were damaged in a fire or stolen during a break-in, replacing them could be expensive.
