Aster Group to transform brownfield site into new affordable homes in Bournemouth
Aster Group has been announced as the local housing association that will own and manage the new affordable homes being built by AJC Group on the former Buzz Bingo site in central Bournemouth.
The brownfield site, which will see the redevelopment of the derelict bingo hall, will provide 40 much-needed new houses and apartments, which will be offered on an affordable rent basis, for the local community. Affordable rent homes are let at least 20% below local market rents inclusive of service charges. A fully licensed contractor has now completed the Asbestos removal, which shall allow for the demolition to proceed.
Located off Christchurch Road, the new modern, energy-efficient homes will be designed and arranged around a central street in a mews style layout with tree planting and parking. The development will be all-electric with each home benefiting from air source heat pumps, a private garden, balcony space at the front for the apartments and a community allotment.
Amanda Williams, Chief Investment Officer at Aster Group, said: "We are thrilled to be part of this exciting redevelopment project in Bournemouth. Our commitment to providing high-quality, affordable homes aligns perfectly with the vision for this site. The new homes will not only offer modern, energy-efficient living spaces but also contribute to the local community's growth.
“With around 5,000 households currently registered on the local housing waiting list, this demand highlights the importance of new affordable housing developments like this, providing long-term security and safety for the people living in these homes."
David Cracklen, Director of AJC Group, said: “We are proud to be delivering this much-needed affordable housing scheme in partnership with Aster Group. Transforming this brownfield site will not only help address local housing needs but also regenerate a prominent location in central Bournemouth. Our design focuses on community, sustainability, and accessibility - ensuring residents benefit from well-connected, modern homes with excellent transport links.”
As a result of the new homes, a significant contribution has been made towards the local authorities Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure plan to improve walking and cycling conditions along Christchurch Road connecting to Lansdowne and the town centre. Future residents will have easy access to public transport, as well as being within walking distance of several essential amenities, encouraging sustainable travel.
Bournemouth train station is a 12-minute walk from the new development, with services to large towns and cities such as Southampton and Winchester. Bournemouth’s famous sandy beach and the town centre is just a 15-minute walk.
The homes will be allocated by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council to those registered on BCP Homechoice, its choice-based letting scheme.
The first affordable homes are expected to be completed in Autumn 2027.
