From Apprentice to Qualified Engineer
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, held in early February, we’re proud to celebrate Harriet, who has successfully completed her Level 3 Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship after four years.
Harriet, now an Improver Gas Engineer, describes completing her apprenticeship as “a massive weight lifted” and a huge personal achievement. What she’s most proud of, though, is the confidence she’s gained along the way.
When Harriet first started, she admits she felt nervous stepping into what she saw as a “man’s world.” But over the past four years, she has proved - to herself and others - that she can do the job just as well as anyone else. From feeling proud of her first pipe bend at college to now confidently fitting boilers, Harriet has come a long way.
She says one of her biggest challenges was proving herself, but she also discovered strengths she didn’t know she had - including resilience. During her apprenticeship, Harriet received an ADHD diagnosis and found that working in a hands-on role has helped her focus and feel at ease. The support of her colleagues, especially the Dorset install team, has played a huge part in her journey.
Her advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
“Go for it. Jump in with both feet. It’s not as daunting as it seems - everyone wants you to achieve.”
Now fully qualified, Harriet is excited about the future and committed to continuing to develop her skills - helping keep customers’ homes safe, warm and running smoothly.
