Big changes coming to disability benefits – Here’s what you need to know

The government is planning some important changes to the benefits system for people with health conditions or disabilities. If you currently receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), or similar benefits, you may be affected.

What’s changing?

Right now, many people have to go through multiple assessments to get support - for example, the Work Capability Assessment and separate PIP assessments. That can be confusing and stressful.

The new reforms aim to:

  • Reduce repeated assessments, so you don’t have to keep proving your condition
  • Focus on your strengths and potential, rather than only your limitations
  • Make it easier for people with long-term conditions or terminal illnesses to access help
  • Support people who want to work, with more flexibility and protection so they don’t lose benefits too quickly.

These changes are still being tested and will be introduced gradually, so don’t worry — nothing is changing overnight.
