New affordable homes on the way for Romsey

Aster Group has completed a purchase of land at Ashfield, on the outskirts of Romsey, Hampshire – paving the way for 29 brand-new affordable homes.

The brownfield site will now be transformed by the housing association into a thriving community of family houses.

Being constructed in partnership with Rivendale Homes, the development will provide a mix of 18 affordable rent homes allocated by Test Valley Borough Council to those registered on its Home Choice Housing Register. 11 shared ownership homes will also be available to people who are looking to take their first steps onto – or back onto – the housing ladder.

All homes will include sustainable features such as air source heat pumps for heating and a bio-bubble sewerage treatment plant. A small green open space will sit at the heart of the scheme, providing an attractive shared space for residents.

Amanda Williams, Chief Investment Officer at Aster Group, said: “We’re delighted to have secured this brownfield site for redevelopment into much needed new sustainable affordable homes, helping local people find a secure long-term place to live. We look forward to welcoming the first customers into their new homes in 2026 and seeing this site become part of the wider Romsey community.”

Situated on the A3057, near Aster’s other new homes at Mountbatten Park in North Baddesley – the Romsey homes will be just two miles from Romsey train and bus stations, providing links to Southampton, Salisbury, Winchester and beyond.

Councillor Kirsty North, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Environmental Health at Test Valley Borough Council, said: “We are really pleased to see affordable homes coming forward on brownfield land on the outskirts of Romsey where there is a high demand on the housing register. This is fantastic for the local community as it puts housing in reach for those who might otherwise struggle to find somewhere to live locally. The mix of rented and shared ownership properties will benefit residents for many years to come.”

Rivendale developments said: “We are thrilled to have recently assisted Aster in acquiring this scheme for 29 houses on the outskirts of the historic town of Romsey. We look forward to delivering this scheme together over the next two years, and to strengthen our relationship with this highly reputable RP.”

The scheme has benefited from Homes England grant funding and will contribute to Nitrate Mitigation and the New Forest Special Protection Area, ensuring it supports both housing and environmental priorities for the area through the Section 106 agreement.

The first homes are due to be ready in autumn 2026 with the whole scheme due to be completed by summer/autumn 2027.
