Our comment on May's speech

“The Prime Minister’s speech emphasises housing’s continued presence at the top of the political agenda. While the government’s renewed focus on meeting delivery rates is important, we want to see more done to support alternative types of housing.

“As Theresa May put it herself, the market won’t fix itself overnight. We shouldn’t over-simplify things and just focusing on quantity won’t address the issue for most people here and now. Mrs May talked about the fact that large deposits continue to be the barrier for people looking to own a home. This is where offering greater choice could help. Growing the market for shared ownership, for example, could lead to significant gains in helping more people access long-term, secure housing and out of the private rented sector.

“We hope the forthcoming social housing green paper will indicate how the government will support our sector and help us tackle the huge housing-related social mobility issues the country faces.”
