Wellbeing for families during school holidays

Published on:

The school holidays are a great opportunity to spend quality time together, try something new and take a break from the usual routine. Whether you're staying at home or heading out on adventures, small activities can make a big difference to your family's wellbeing.

Here are five simple ideas to help everyone feel happier, healthier and more connected over the holidays.

1. Spend time together

Strong relationships help us feel supported and build resilience. Even small moments together can have a positive impact.

You could enjoy meals without screens, take turns sharing the best and worst parts of your day, or start a family gratitude jar where everyone adds something they're thankful for. Planning a picnic or meeting up with friends and family is another great way to stay connected.

2. Get moving

Being active isn't just good for our physical health – it can also boost our mood, improve sleep and help us manage stress.

Try starting the day with a family walk, stretching session or dance around the living room. You could set yourselves a step challenge, head out on a nature scavenger hunt or make rainy days fun with indoor games like balloon volleyball or an obstacle course.

3. Take time to notice the little things

It's easy to rush through the holidays, but slowing down and appreciating the world around us can help improve our wellbeing.

Why not go on a walk and see how many different things you can spot, hear or smell? You could keep a holiday photo diary, encourage children to draw something they've noticed each day or spend a few minutes before bedtime talking about the best or most surprising part of the day.

4. Learn something new

Trying something different helps build confidence and keeps curious minds engaged.

Choose a family challenge such as baking a new recipe, learning a magic trick or trying origami. Many museums, libraries and community venues also offer free family activities during the holidays, giving everyone the chance to discover something new together.

5. Spread a little kindness

Helping others doesn't just brighten someone else's day – it can boost your own wellbeing too.

You could write thank-you cards, bake something for a neighbour, donate books or clothes you no longer need, or simply spend uninterrupted time doing an activity your child chooses.

Enjoy the holidays together

There's no right or wrong way to spend the school holidays. Whether you try one of these ideas or all five, making time to connect, move, learn and be kind can help create happy memories and support your family's wellbeing.
